Approximately half of the Algonquin Hills subdivision is located within the Village of Algonquin. The roads in this part of our neighborhood are paved, plowed, salted, and otherwise maintained by the Village.
The remainder of our subdivision is located in unincorporated Algonquin Township. Because Algonquin Hills is a private subdivision with private roads, our community is solely responsible for road maintenance and upkeep.
We receive a small amount of annual funding courtesy of the Algonquin Township and McHenry County, which comes from the Motor Fuel Tax fund. These funds are allocated to the “Non-Dedicated Roads” program to assist with road projects throughout McHenry County.
Funds are allocated based on need and the linear mileage of gravel roads in each neighborhood. There are 22 individual neighborhoods in McHenry County that belong to the NDR road program, with Algonquin Hills being the largest with more than 3 miles of unpaved roads.
Our annual allocation of road maintenance funds is approximately $15,000. That is split into $10,000 for materials (gravel) and $5,000 for labor and machinery work. Our Road Representative is currently working with several IDOT approved contractors to obtain quotes and begin scheduling road maintenance work for 2023.
Due to the limited amount of funds collected by AHIA, we currently do not have a budget for road maintenance or repairs. We kindly ask that all residents pitch in and help maintain our roads. If each resident helped fix several potholes in and around their own residence, we can help keep our roads in serviceable condition.
Please help us keep records of all road work performed by residents! These records help us secure additonal “matching” funds from the Township & County to help pay for our road maintenance. Please email [email protected] any time you perform road maintenance work. Thank you!
Frequently Asked Questions
Unfortunately, no. Algonquin Hills was established way back in 1926 as a private neighborhood and is not under the jurisdiction of any government agency. Therefore, it is our responsibility to maintain and care for our roads.
Yes and no. Prior Township road commissioners used Township materials, labor and equipment to help maintain our roads and "charged" us by taking funds from our allocation of MFT dollars. In the summer of 2022, IDOT determined that this practice is NOT acceptable and that the Township is not to use any materials, labor, or equipment to maintain or work on private subdivision roads. Therefore, it is our responsibility to maintain our own roads and to find IDOT-approved contractors to perform work using the funding we receive from the Township & McHenry County.
Every homeowner in Algonquin Township pays taxes which are used to maintain the Township roads that we all drive on. Just because we pay taxes doesn't mean it is their responsibility to maintain our roads. Remember, we live in a PRIVATE community. Our roads are privately owned and it is OUR responsibility to maintain them either with our own labor or by raising funds through association dues to pay for them.
Back in 2016, there was a program put in place by McHenry County to help pave and take over maintenance on some of the Nondedicated roads. They allocated 3 million dollars to this project, which was only enough to pave a few miles of road around McHenry County. This is how portions of Oakwood and Deerpath were paved and are now plowed and salted by the Township. Unfortunately, the funding is now exhausted and this program is defunct.
If we want to explore additional options for getting our roads paved and taken over by the Township or County, we will have to appeal directly to the McHenry County Board and IDOT.
